RightWay 355 GPS Navigator with Street Name Text-to-Speech

The RightWay 355 works straight out of the box. No software installation needed! It comes with preloaded Navteq map data of the continental United States. Just turn the RW 355 on and it¿s ready to use. Follow the menus on the 3.5 inch color touch screen to enter an address or search for a point of interest. In less than a minute, the RW 355 acquires a satellite fix, determines your exact location, and calculates a route from point to point anywhere in the continental U.S. It will even provide an estimated time of arrival. Entering an address in some navigation systems can be a hassle, but not with the RW 355. Predictive text makes it simple. Starting with the first letter or number entered, the RW 355 is searching its data base for matches and displaying the most likely results. Highlight your choice and you are on your way. So even if you can¿t spell Albuquerque, NM you can get there. With the RW 355 mounted on your windshield and an address entered, you are ready to go. Not only does the RW 355 have voice guidance telling you which way to turn to reach your destination, it has street name text-to-speech capabilities in English, French or Spanish. The RW 355 will audibly announce the name of the street or exit you will be turning on, enabling you to focus on the road. The RightLaneAssistantTM will even show you which lane to be in so you won¿t miss your next turn. But even if you miss a turn it¿s okay, the RW 355 automatically re-routes you. With 1.7 million points of interest (POIs) stored in its memory, you can locate the nearest airport, gas station, hotel, restaurant, hospital, shopping center or even a zoo no matter where you are. Navteq maps, clear driving instructions and a straight forward user interface make the RW 355 GPS Navigator a system that anyone could use. In the Box: RW 355 GPS Navigator, Car charger, Wall charger, Mounting system, Warranty, Quick Start Guide and CD User Manual.

Navigation is just the beginning.

See Even More
It’s easy to see where you’re going on nüvi 1490T’s 5-inch touchscreen display. View map detail, driving directions, photos and more in bright, brilliant color. With its large screen, you’ll always get the big picture.

Navigate City Transit
With its enhanced pedestrian navigation capabilities, nüvi 1490T is the perfect travel companion for getting around town. Download optional cityXplorer content to help you navigate city public transit. Know where to walk, where to catch the bus, subway, tram or other transportation and how long it will take to get there. cityXplorer maps are available for select cities throughout North America and Europe. And with prices as low as .99, you’ll have money left over to spend in the big city.

Take It With You
Twenty-five percent slimmer than other nüvis, you can take the ultra-thin 1490T anywhere. It easily fits in your pocket or purse, and its rechargeable lithium-ion battery makes it convenient for navigation by car or foot.

Know the Lane Before It’s Too Late
No more guessing which lane you need to be in to make an upcoming turn. Lane assist with junction view guides you to the correct lane for an approaching turn or exit, making unfamiliar intersections and exits easy to navigate. It realistically displays road signs and junctions on your route along with arrows that indicate the proper lane for navigation.

Plan Ahead
nüvi 1490T includes advanced navigation features to take the worry out of traveling. With route planning you can save 10 routes, specify via points and preview simulated turns on the 1490T’s large screen. In addition, nüvi 1490T automatically sorts multiple destinations to provide an efficient route for errands, deliveries or sales calls. A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you’ve been on the map.

Get Turn-by-Turn Directions
nüvi 1490T’s intuitive interface greets you with two simple questions: “Where To?” and “View Map.” Touch the color screen to easily look up addresses and services and get voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions that speak street names to your destination. It comes preloaded with detailed City Navigator NT street maps, nearly 6 million points of interest (POIs), 2-D or 3-D maps and the speed limit for most major roads. Its digital elevation maps show you shaded contours at higher zoom levels, giving you a big picture of the surrounding terrain. With the 1490T’s enhanced user interface, you can slide your finger to conveniently scroll between screens. You can also upload custom points of interest (POIs). And with HotFix satellite prediction, nüvi calculates your position faster to get you there quicker.

Receive Free Traffic Alerts

Next, simply touch nüvi’s screen to view traffic details or detour around the problem area. Watch informational video

Lifetime traffic extends for the useful life of your Garmin traffic receiver (as long as you own a compatible Garmin GPS) or as long as Garmin receives traffic data from its traffic supplier, whichever is shorter.

Go Beyond Navigation
Navigation is just the beginning. nüvi 1490T saves you gas and money with ecoRoute–a green feature that calculates the most fuel-efficient route, tracks fuel usage and more. The 1490T includes many travel tools including JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more. With photo navigation, you can download pictures from Garmin Connect Photos and navigate to them. It’s also compatible with MSN Direct (receiver purchase and subscription required). With its “Where Am I?” emergency locator, you always know your location. Simply tap the screen to get your exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and fuel stations. The 1490T features Garmin Lock, an anti-theft feature, and is compatible with our free Garmin Garage where you can download custom voices and vehicles. Enhance your travel experience with optional plug-in microSD cards.

What’s in the Box
nüvi 1490T, Preloaded City Navigator NT for North America, Lifetime traffic, FM traffic receiver with vehicle power cable, Vehicle suction cup mount, USB cable, Dashboard disc, Quick start manual

NOTE: The initial setup is crucial when first using your nüvi – it allows the device to find and sync with satellites. The startup screen will allow you to skip through this section but doing so could cause your nüvi to have difficulty working the way it should. Without completing this important step, your nüvi may default back to the location of Kansas City each time it is turned off and on again, not saving your settings. It also may not be able to pick up the satellite properly.

Which nüvi is Best for You?

Note: All nüvis come with detailed NAVTEQ maps containing more than 6 million pre-loaded point of interest locations.

I don’t understand all of the complaints about this GPS. I was a little nervous about buying it after reading many of the bad reviews, but did anyway, due to Garmin’s reputation and the Great Price on Amazon. It basically had all of the features I wanted.

I replaced a Street Pilot that was stolen out of my car and have been very pleased with the 1490T. I travel four states for a living and have had it now for about two months, so I have used it quite a bit. It is very easy to use and the larger screen is a real plus. The only problem I have had, is that it did lock up on me once, for some reason, but it has never happened again. My only complaint is that the map detail is considerably less than my old Street Pilot. That’s why I gave it a 4 Star and not a 5 Star. By the same token, if I had not had the Street Pilot, with great detail, I wouldn’t miss it. I will say that the screen is not nearly as cluttered. I have not used the Bluetooth, because I already have a Bluetooth Speaker Phone for my Blackberry.

Overall I think I made a good choice. I would recommend this GPS to anyone !

Protection Your GPS Needs
Considered a fringe automotive technology only a few years ago, today GPS (Global Positioning System) units are commonplace in vehicles across globe, with over 40 million sold worldwide in 2008. This was followed up by an even larger estimated total in 2009. Unfortunately with this astounding spike in the popularity of the technology has come a drastic rise in GPS related auto break ins. In the US alone the rise in GPS thefts over the last few years has risen over 700% and appears to be a trend that will continue. You might think a common sense tactic of storing GPS units out of sight, or removing them from vehicles when not in use would remove the potential threat, but the truth is that even telltale signs of a GPS in the car, like a cradle on the dashboard or residue from a windshield suction cup can prompt a break-in attempt. This can lead to costly repairs and even increased insurance premiums. GPS owner need a real solution to protect their GPS and vehicles, and that’s just what the Maplock is.

How It Works
The Maplock provides two tiers of protection; one a visual deterrent to a break-in, while the other is physical protection of your GPS when and if the first line of defense fails. First and foremost the device is meant to be seen by potential thieves, the assumption being that a vehicle possessing obvious security features is much more likely to be passed over by thieves in favor of easier, less risky targets. To that end, the Maplock comes in a variety of bright, even stylish colors. The physically protective aspects of the device are also visible for all to see. These consist of a braided stainless steel cable, one end of which loops around an edge of your steering wheel, while the other connects, via a very visible lock to the main body of the Maplock, which encloses your GPS unit. Constructed out of sturdy materials, this main body is designed to clamp diagonally around your GPS, and is compatible with virtually any automobile oriented GPS on the market with a screen size ranging from 3.5-inches to 5-inches. The contact points of the inner surface of the Maplock body are padded with rubber spacers so as to not damage the screen or finish of your GPS as it clamps tightly down and is connected to the cable attached to the steering wheel via the lock. This combination of visual deterrence and physical protection against theft that only the Maplock provides make it the right choice for any GPS owner who wants to get the most out of their navigational tool, without losing peace of mind.

Key Features:

  • Provides both physical security for GPS units, and a visual deterrent against potential “smash and grab” thieves.
  • Provides user with the confidence to leave their GPS in the car, where it is needed.
  • Fits most auto GPS units with diagonal screen sizes ranging from 3.5-inches to 5-inches, and is adjustable to a wide variety of unit thickness.
  • Rugged outer construction and key secure your GPS in place without scratching it.
  • Braided stainless steel cable provides extra security by attaching your GPS enclosed by the maplock, to the steering wheel.

What’s in the Box
1-Maplock device, 3-rubber spacers, 1-security cable, 2-keys, 1-storage pouch.

Pioneer Car AVICD3X Double-DIN DVD Navigation System, iPod Direct Cable, Bluetooth Wireless Adapter, and Remote Control

March 9th, 2010 by admin

Pioneer Car AVICD3X Double-DIN DVD Navigation System, iPod Direct Cable, Bluetooth Wireless Adapter, and Remote Control

PIONEER SPECIAL

An incredible deal from Pioneer! Includes the AVIC-D3 Navigation System, CD-I200 iPod Cable, CD-BTB200 Bluetooth Wireless Adapter, and CD-R55 Remote Control.

Pros:
- Navigation with voice guidance.
- Bluetooth module will make connection with your cellphone automatically.
- Make or receive phone call through the deck
- The navigation will still work after you take out the map disc (ONLY if you pre-set your destination(s))

Cons:
- (MP3) While listening to it, for instance, I want to listen to song #136. I can’t simply press 1, 3, 6. on the remote. It doesn’t have such fuction.
- (MP3) There’s a “random” option while listen to music. However, there’s no “program” option, where I can set the player to play certain songs in sequence.
- (Navigation) – It’s slightly off sometimes, but it will adjust itself quick.

Bluetooth Problem:
_________________________________

I heard a lot of people talks about the problem on the bluetooth – “PHONEBOOK” on the deck. But if you read carefully, the menu said you need to register your phone. Then connect, then pressed “phonebook.” The deck will DISCONNECT itself, and now, use the bluetooth on your phone to transfer the phonebook.

1.) you need to “REGISTER” your phone.
2.) “CONNECT” your cellphone with the deck.
3.) Then, pressed the “PHONEBOOK TRANSFER” option, (The deck will DISCONNECT its bluetooth connection with the cellphone.)
4.) USE YOUR PHONE to transfer the phonebook through bluetooth.

Navigation (1 disc slot) Problem:
_______________________
About the one disc slot issue, I personally recommend to get a IPOD. So you can listen to your music and use the navigation system in its full capacity. You can put your DVD-R MP3 disc after you have saved all destinations on the navigator, but the navigator wouldn’t fuction in its full capacity. (You can’t change, add, or re-route your destinations)

Kenwood Excelon DNX8120 – Navigation system with DVD player, LCD monitor, digital player and radio

March 8th, 2010 by admin

Kenwood Excelon DNX8120 - Navigation system with DVD player, LCD monitor, digital player and radio

With one-touch access to entertainment, navigation, and Bluetooth technology, Kenwood’s DNX8120 is the ultimate all in one. A highly advanced in-dash system, the DNX8120 offers guidance by Garmin, premium NAVTEQ mapping, and built-in Bluetooth technology for hands-free cell phone operation and voice dialing. The DNX8120 provides superior sound quality, a 6.95″ touchscreen with advanced GUI, and the industry’s fastest access to iPod audio and video files.

The 8120 is very expensive all by it’s self. Don’t forget about all your excessories, install items, and the install price it’s self. I bought a refurbished model and saved 0. I only installed the iPod cable and it still set me back about 00 installed.
I have the Bose system in my 2005 Tahoe and it seems to be a little touchy. The volume is much lower than stock, and, even after setting all the speakers to zero db. I still get a crackling noise at max. volume. I’ve even bought new speakers, thinking my stock ones were blown. They weren’t, so I’m going to try bypassing the Bose amp. next. The separation seems to be better. However, based on this alone, I wouldn’t do it again. Unless I was ready to blow another 00 or more for speaker and amplifier upgrades. Even though I’m having these problems, I don’t blame this unit. This really is a top notch receiver, and, once I get the kinks worked out, I’m sure it will perform perfect.
The Navigation seems to perform in true Garmin fashion; Really good! Garmin is rated #1 buy all the review sites. I haven’t really had a chance to play with the navigation yet, except it seems to be pretty accurate in most cases.
The iPod control is very cool. I’d almost venture to say it’s better than the iPod it’s self. I have the 3rd generation nano and even the album art work shows up. It has a scroll bar on the left side of the music menu which alows you to quickly jump through your vast library. And if you have video’s on your iPod, you can watch them. I’m kind of new to this game, but, I can’t imagine getting a better interface.
The bluetooth connection is also pretty complete. I have the razor2 with verizon, and it downloaded my whole phonebook. I’m told by those I’ve called I sound pretty good. Onstar definately sounds better though.
I’m giving it 5 stars becuase it won’t alow me to give it 4 1/2. The only negative being the price.

Garmin nüvi 855 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Speech Recognition

Garmin International’s nüvi 855 is a GPS navigator and personal travel assistant featuring voice-activated navigation and lane assist with junction view. Navigate with confidence while nüvi directs you to the preferred lane while driving. Also, see realistic images of upcoming junctions where available.

Lane assist guides you to the correct lane for an approaching turn or exit, making unfamiliar intersections and exits easy to navigate. Click to enlarge

Junction View gives you a photo-realistic screen that shows you both the road detail as well as the signs as you will see them on the road. Click to enlarge

The nüvi 855 offers full coverage mapping for the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. The preloaded map data features nearly six million points of interest, including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs and attractions. The map data is provided by NAVTEQ, a world leader in premium-quality mapping.

Simply speaking, nüvi 855 is one advanced navigator. It features voice-activated navigation, a widescreen display, preloaded maps, an FM transmitter and more. Like the rest of the wide nüvi 800-series, just speak a menu option and nüvi obeys your command.

Speak Commands
nüvi 855 not only tells you where to turn but listens to your spoken commands. With nüvi’s innovative speech recognition, you safely control nüvi’s interface with your voice–allowing you to keep both hands on the wheel. Simply press the button on the remote (which attaches to the steering wheel) to activate speech recognition and begin speaking menu options. nüvi even recognizes shortcut phrases for popular functions. Tell nüvi “Find Address” and speak an address to start navigating.

With nüvi 855’s widescreen display, you’ll always get the big picture. View map detail, driving directions, photos and more in bright, brilliant color. Its sunlight-readable, 4.3-inch display is easy to read–from any direction.

Know the Lane Before It’s Too Late
nüvi 855 takes navigation to the next level with lane assist. No more guessing which lane you need to be in to make an upcoming turn. Lane assist guides you to the correct lane for an approaching turn or exit, making unfamiliar intersections and exits easy to navigate. It realistically displays road signs and junctions on your route along with arrows that indicate the proper lane for navigation.

And with the 3D Lane Assist Junction View, you’ll be able to see a photo-realistic screen that shows you both the road detail as well as the signs as you will see them on the road. The signs that aren’t needed for navigation are faded compared to the appropriate lane signage.

Navigate With Ease
nüvi 855 comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps and millions of points of interest (POIs) such as hotels, restaurants, fuel stations, ATMs and more. Speak a menu option or touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nüvi takes you there with 2-D or 3-D maps and turn-by-turn voice directions. It even announces the name of exits and streets so you never have to take your eyes off the road. In addition, nüvi 855 accepts custom points of interest, such as school zones and safety cameras and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs.

Where am I?
Keep track of yourself and your car with nüvi 855. Just speak or tap “Where Am I?” to find the closest hospitals, police stations, fuel stations, nearest address and intersection. Also see your exact latitude and longitude coordinates. nüvi 855 even remembers where you parked. It automatically marks your position when you remove it from the windshield mount, so you can navigate with nüvi on foot and find your way back to your vehicle. Perfect for unfamiliar spots and crowded lots such as amusement parks, stadiums and malls.

With the POI loader program users can set up proximity alerts for school zones, safety cameras, create custom POIs and more. Click to enlarge

A handy MP3 player lets you play songs stored on SD memory cards.

Plan Ahead
nüvi 855 includes advanced navigational features to take the worry out of traveling. With route planning you can save 10 routes, specify via points and preview simulated turns on the 855’s wide screen. In addition, nüvi 855 automatically sorts multiple destinations to provide an efficient route for errands, deliveries or sales calls. It also displays speed limits for highways and Interstates. A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you’ve been on the map.

Take It With You
nüvi 855’s high-sensitivity internal (non flip-up) antenna gives it a sleeker, thinner design than the nüvi 600-series, making it easy to slip in your pocket or purse. Its rechargeable lithium-ion battery makes it convenient for navigation by car or on foot.

Go Beyond Navigation
Navigation is just the beginning. nüvi 855 includes many “must have” entertainment and travel tools including MP3 player, audio book player (subscription to Audible.com required), JPEG picture viewer, currency converters, Garmin Games, alarm clock and more. With the included wireless FM transmitter, you can hear audio, including voice prompts, MP3s and audio books, through your vehicle’s stereo. It’s also compatible with optional FM traffic alerts or optional MSN Direct content. With photo navigation, you can download Google Panoramio pictures via our Garmin Connect Photos website and navigate to them. The 855 features Garmin Lock, an anti-theft feature, and is compatible with our free Garmin Garage where you can download custom vehicles that show your location on the map. Enhance your travel experience with optional plug-in microSD cards such as Garmin Travel Guides for detailed data on attractions.

As I write this, the Nuvi 855 is the only portable GPS with voice recognition, but it is not yet much competition for a factory unit, despite being 5x to 10x cheaper. The cabin must be very quiet in order to get the voice recognition to work; the radio must be turned-down, and the windows up. It will then work pretty well, within its limits.

Mine has frozen-up once in the several times I’ve used it thus far, and requires removal of power plus turning it off then on to reset. So far, it’s a minor annoyance, but it could get to be very aggravating if it happens very often.

As with several other units I’ve used, the fully charged battery only lasts a day or two when the unit is turned off. This makes it virtually useless for out-of-car use. Apparently, the unit attempts to stay locked-on to the satellites even when turned off. This results in fast boot-up, but needs less power consumption to be useful. One could always remove the battery (unlike many other systems) to avoid having it go flat.

Most of the other features are as good as other units I’ve used, so I have no major complaints there. The audio out jack is nice, since I can connect to my car radio when I need some volume. If there were a mic input, that might solve the noise vs. recognition issue.

Now, if either Garmin or Magellan were to combine the features (voice recognition, removable battery, better interface) of the Nuvi 855 with the large (7″) screen and customizable one-touch menu of the Roadmate 1700, that would be a must-have GPS receiver!

      What’s in the Box
RoadMate 1440 GPS receiver, Pre-loaded maps of the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico, Windshield mount, Adhesive disc for dash mounting, Vehicle power adapter, User handbook, USB cable, User manual on CD-ROM

I bought this and an extra traffic antenna (was on sale on Amazon for ). For that, I have a pretty good GPS and the life-time traffic service.

The freeway guidance is a nice feature to have. Very easy to understand.

There’s no Bluetooth feature on this GPS. Well, that’s not a big deal. I also have a 4250, but it can never automatically connect the phone everytime the car is started. Also, the volume seems to be capped at 60%. So…..trust me, you’re not missing much.

The bracket is totally redesigned, which is a bummer. I have the AC vent mount clip I bought for 4250 and 300, and now I have to buy one that’s designed for 1440. MAgellan should be sticking with a universal mount for all Magellan products.

The reception is super good. I’ve been travelling with it for 2 months now, and 90% of the chance I can get reception in the hotel room, meaning I can get the next day’s trip planned.

The traffic service…..well, I really don’t bump into too much traffic, but there’s once that it does prompt me to take a detour to avoid traffic, so I guess it’s working as designed.

Overall, for 0, this GPS is pretty good. I still remember I bought the Roadmate 300 with 0.

Easy to Use Right Out of the Box

Garmin's own navigation is easy to use
One of Garmin’s key product philosophies is, “to make extremely complex technology easy to use for anyone right out of the box,” and perhaps nowhere is that better exemplified than in the user interface for Garmin’s portable navigation devices.

Garmin’s interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip.

      New – Voice Recognition

Usable voice recognition is something we’ve been waiting to see for a  long time. Reaching over to type out directions on your GPS isn’t just difficult, it can feel downright dangerous. There’s even a warning on every GPS not to do it. But who has the time to sit still and punch in a destination? Well, now you can have your hurry and your directions too.

The nüvi 800s aren’t the first GPS navigators to offer voice recognition, but the level of flexibility they offer sets a new standard for simple and intuitive use.

The device comes with a little remote control that mounts on your steering wheel. It has two buttons. One is, “listen.” The other is, “stop listening”. Hit the “listen” button to start voice recognition. Then you can speak any of the words that appear on the display, and the device will understand, or you can ask questions based on most points of interest. Say, “find nearest Italian restaurant,” for example, and you’ll get a list of nearby spots. Say “go to” and name of the one you want, and you get turn-by-turn directions to dinner. The nüvi also knows the names of many large business brands, so you can just say, “find place, Starbucks,” if that’s your coffee mojo.

Of course, if you know the address you want to go to, you can say that too, and the nüvi will give you directions, all without having to reach over to the dashboard and touch it.

Speech recognition is available for American English, British English, European French, European Spanish, German, Italian, and Netherlands Dutch languages.

Traffic-Capable for Either FM Traffic or Enhanced MSN Direct Content (optional receiver required)

MSN Direct Enhanced Traffic and Content

traffic reports With an optional receiver, you can access enhanced dynamic content from the MSN Direct service. Check the weather, avoid traffic backups, compare local gas prices, get enhanced movie listings, stock information, news and local events when you travel with your unit. Even plan trips from the convenience of your computer, via Windows Live Local, and wirelessly send custom to your nüvi.

Check out a full description of MSN Direct content features, or a coverage map for MSN Direct services.

A 3-month subscription to MSN Direct is included with the receiver. After that, subscription fees are .95 per year, or 9.95 for a lifetime subscription.

      FM Traffic

TMC traffic service coverage map With an optional receiver, you can get alerts from TMC Clear Channel about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you’ll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you’re forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nüvi’s sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time.

In most areas, TMC Clear Channel traffic broadcasts are continuous — there’s no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a “silent” FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.

A 3-month subscription to TMC Clear Channel’s Total Traffic Network is included with the receiver. For more information on subscription fees, coverage in individual cities, and traffic data networks in the United Kingdom and Europe, check the Garmin website.

Widescreen — See More of What’s Around

The super-bright, 4.3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views.

The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

Wider screen lets you see more of what’s around. Compare these actual size views of a 3-inch (diagonal) screen

      3-inch screen

      and a 4.3-inch diagonal widescreen

      4.3-inch screen

      Multi-Destination Routing

This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care – supermarket-cleaners – office – day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you’ve found the best router, the “Route Planning” feature lets you  save up to 10 different routes, Garmin touts the feature for providing, “the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls.” The feature also makes this an instant essential accessory for anyone who shops garage sales (you know what we’re talking about).

A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you’ve been on the map.

      Where Am I?

Garmin’s “Where Am I?” feature is a useful safety feature on all nüvis, but voice recognition makes it even better.

On any nüvi (including this one), you can just tap “Where Am I?” to find the closest hospitals, police stations, fuel stations, nearest address and intersection. Also see your exact latitude and longitude coordinates. With the 800s, all you have to do is say “Where am I?” to get the info.

      Where’s My Car?

Like the nüvi 700s, the 800s will also remember where you parked. It automatically marks your position when you remove it from the windshield mount, so you can navigate with nüvi on foot and find your way back to your vehicle. Perfect for unfamiliar spots and crowded lots such as amusement parks, stadiums and malls.

      MSN Direct Coverage Map

This is a wonderful little machine. It is the basic 800 series which means it has the same engine as the most expensive units without some of the bells and whistles, and yet has all that is convenient and important.

It is highly accurate, and fast. I love the feature where it remembers where I left the car when I take it out of its cradle and will guide me right to my car if I need to. When I go to a site in a mall or a large complex like a hospital I can save the exact location of where I am and use that instead of an address which at times can be vague.

For example when I visit a large hospital here with several entrances it will guide me right to the parking place I chose to make into a favorite.

The voice recognition works very well. I never have to touch the unit to perform any and all of the many options available to me. For example while I am driving I can direct it via voice activated command to take me to the nearest Burger King, of Hampton Inn, either as detour or as a new destination.

I find the volume from the unit sufficient, but I prefer to hear directions through my car stereo system. Since my FM antenna is located at the back of the car the FM from the GPS unit does not work too well. I bought one of those little cigarette lighter FM transmitters, and connected it to the GPS audio output and it works just fine. If you have an audio input to your car stereo you don’t need the FM transmitter; just connect your GPS directly through that.

All in all I am very satisfied with this unit, and I am happy to recommend it to any person who is interested in adding a GPS system to their car, or replacing an older unit as I did.
