#Interesting comment about this product.
DNX6160 I bought about a month ago, because it is the function that I used for my car. I was with the fact that the Garmin navigation system using impressed. I was already with the Nav, because that is what is using my old system and was a breeze to update and upload. The other units I saw there were proprietery with their navigation systems. The Parrot Blue Tooth was easy to install, but does not accept my call list, this is a big turn off for me, I have aCall list and their number is an easy way for me to manually enter all the numbers on the device. I need to know to take my phone, calling me every time it rings. You want a good job and calls the communication is clear, both incoming and outgoing (so I was told).
The sound of this unit is excellent … even with my stock Ford Explorer Speakers and Sub. There are many ways to shape the sound of the EQ section and I could hear noises in the right quadrant is great, whatme. I did not buy the iPod connection, because I make sure that the device worked for me before spending a lot of money for accessories wanted. However, I have the drive that I use for the steering wheel controller that can control some functions of the platform. I highly recommend this option, although it is not cheap.
The DVD can be modified to play from the front of the unit on the screen while the vehicle is in motion, so that the passenger, you should see the next time a movie on long trips.A refuge for this is during the day, the unit difficult to see because the sun's reflection bounced around in the car. Would that allow you to tilt the unit up / down left / right just a hair to help, but ….. do not.
I also inserted a disk drive not to play … also some pretty scratched disks seem to play well enough. This is a big plus.
One of the downsides for me is … the start time for this device seemsa bit 'exaggerated (20-30 sec) This is a big expense if you are in the car while on my phone or receive a call on my cell phone when you start the car and roll ready. I have to wait, to go anywhere until the boot drive …. able to warm up the engine a bit ': or # help
# I do not buy XM or Sirius tuner, is waiting to see if the drive that I like well enough at first.
I like the adjustable feature on the device to the colors on the back groundLights, but I would be able to download most of my pictures on your device to display … so far I have only been able to upload a single image.
Be sure to install the belts of this unit in their first car. Mine had to be replaced because evil was sold to me and was a great effort.
I give the unit an 8 out of 10 for my application, although a bit 'expensive, but …. I got what I paid!

#Interesting comment about this product.
I’ve used many little bluetooth GPS units before because I develop land surveying equipment. I’ve also used many survey grade recievers that cost K. I know what I am talking about.

This one is by far the best cheap hand-held unit I’ve used. Battery lasts for ages and the satellite acquisition is really fast compared to other chipsets. I left it sitting outside for a week once, still turned on, and due to the power save mode it still worked when I remembered about it a week later and reconnected. Ran for another 8 hours or so before it finally ran out of juice.

It will even get satellites in a basement under a 2 story house. Of course, the location isn’t very accurate, but the fact that it even gets a signal is very impressive.

Size-wise it is smaller than a deck of cards – about the size of a really small flip cell phone. 3 AA batteries together, and one lengthwise across them endwise is the approximate size.

Can’t go wrong with this unit. It is standard bluetooth serial port profile (SPP slave) and streams NMEA data the moment you connect. The strings it supports are GGA,GSA,GSV,RMC.

#Interesting comment about this product.
I just installed mine today and I can see I will really like this radio. I have the Sirius radio and the GPS is on point. Bluetooth works really well too. It does take time to get used to but once u get it u should feel real good having it in ur car. Only thing I don’t like is the start up time which can be like 30 seconds but if that is not the problem then this will do the trick. I also added 4 Kenwood 6×9 exelon speakers to do my system justice and man let me tell you. This is expensive (broke college student)but I need my sound and it was well worth it. Oh yeah, I don’t have an ipod but I will comment later on how it sounds playing the usb songs.

Update: The usb works great! you can see the album skins which is nice. I don’t think it gets better than this for the price too. I will eventually get the back up cam to finish it off but for now this thing works beautifully. DVD is clear and sound is amazing.

Cons: should have came with free traffic updates but that’s just me.

    #Interesting comment about this product.
I purchased this unit for my vehicle, and couldn’t be happier! Very solid unit, lots of options, fairly straightforward install. My only complaint is the minimal installation instructions, presumably because Clarion prefers that their stereos be professionally installed, however, I didn’t really have any problems installing it.

UPDATE: DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO THE LIMIT OF THE NUMBER OF SONGS ON A USB DRIVE! Manual says 1500 max…I have 2350 on an 8GB drive, and it is rocking just fine…

    #Interesting comment about this product.
Excellent model, for the most part, appreciably better than the Garmin 765T which I purchased from Amazon at a higher cost and tried for about two weeks, but which never was able to receive traffic reports as advertised. Garmin’s technical support was weak at best and not able to solve the problem. Garmin ultimately determined that its traffic receiver was defective and told me that I had to return it for a replacement. Unfortunately, the traffic receiver was built into the power cord. I asked Garmin to send me the new cord/receiver first, so that I would still be able to keep my GPS plugged in and charging while in the car, but Garmin refused to do so, telling me I had to return its defective cord/receiver before it would send me a new one and that I could charge its model using the enclosed USB cable (through my computer). I took advantage of Amazon’s return policy and returned the Garmin to Amazon for a full refund (Amazon’s rep even e-mailed me a pre-paid shipping label).

The TomTom GO 630 has a pretty vivid wide screen display (in your choice of 2D or 3D) and allows much more flexibility with respect to display options than the Garmin 765. For example, the TomTom permits you to display time to destination, miles to destination, estimated time of arrival, and speed, all at once or in any combination, while the Garmin model permits the display of only one of these parameters at a time. The Garmim model did have more categories of POI’s (for example, it allows you to choose restaurants by type of cuisine) than the TomTom, so that might be of greater use to some people. The TomTom also occasionally shows streets that do not exist in real life, but I am guessing that may be an issue with all GPS models. Finally, it would be nice if, like earlier versions of TomTom GO GPS models, this model turned on automatically (when plugged in) when you start your engine. Interestingly, it turns off on its own when you turn off the engine.

On balance, however, these are minor nits and the quality of the display, ability to set favorites, database of POI’s (with the added ability to telephone a POI directly if you have your phone connected via blue tooth), connectivity and ease of use of the blue tooth – cell phone feature, and flexibility of display output make this a very good choice. There is also a nice feature that gives you the option to input your desired time of arrival and thereafter the GPS displays how many minutes ahead of (in yellow) or behind (in red) your scheduled arrival time you are. I have found this to be a pretty useful “at-a-glance” indicator, in addition to the ETA display that also can be selected in the set-up.

    ecoRoute
With this feature, drivers can view suggestions for fuel-efficient navigation, conserving both money and fuel:

    • Save Gas and Money
Now more than ever, we’re all looking for ways to conserve both money and fuel. Whether we’re taking fewer trips or carpooling with family and friends, saving resources is a top priority. It was that thinking that led to the creation of ecoRoute–our free software update for compatible nüvi products that allows users to find more fuel efficient routes when navigating and even track their fuel usage. With ecoRoute, you may be able to save gas and money by adopting smarter driving habits and finding more fuel-efficient routes.

    • Select Fuel-efficient Routes
With ecoRoute, users will have a “less fuel” option as a routing preference. When selected, nüvi will determine if more fuel efficient routes exist based upon road speed data and vehicle acceleration data for a given route.
    • Get Fuel and Mileage Reports
Through ecoRoute’s Fuel Report and Mileage Report, drivers can focus on their habits even when they’re not behind the wheel. Fuel Report tracks fuel usage over time, and Mileage Report monitors mileage and fuel usage on a per-trip basis. In addition, Mileage Report makes it easy for business travelers to keep track of distance traveled for company reimbursements. You’ll have a detailed report for each trip and the miles driven. You can also customize your nüvi by entering your car’s fuel economy and the current price of gas.

Search for locations on Google Maps or Mapquest, then transfer the addresses directly to your Garmin GPS navigator.

Navigate by Photo with Garmin Connect Photos
Using Garmin’s Connect Photos Web site, you can choose from millions of geo-located photos provided by Google’s Panoramio photo sharing community and download them to the nüvi for a richer navigation experience using pictures as a guide.

    • Choose from Panoramio’s collection of photos from around the world.
    • Easy to use interface displays photos on Google Maps.
    • Search for photos by location name or map area boundary.
    • Transfer photos directly from Garmin Connect to device with the Garmin Communicator.
    • View photos in Google Earth.

    #Interesting comment about this product.
I’ve had the Nuvi 1690 for a little over a month now and am impressed. You should know that this is my first G.P.S. receiver so I can’t compare it to any other one. I’m 72 so I can’t help but marvel at what this little small marvel is doing. From satellites several thousand miles up the receiver can somehow know where it is to within a few feet or so. When I adjust my cruise control it registers the change on the speed dial within a second. For that matter it tells me when the speed limit has changed at about the same moment that I see a speed limit sign on the side of the road. One wonders what Thomas Jefferson, a scientific founding father would have thought and written about this. I remember what a scientific friend of mine told me when I was working a summer job as a cab driver while attending college. My biggest challenge was knowing where to go when a fare jumped into the cab and rattled off an address and expected me to get him there in as short a time as possible. I told my friend that I wished one of these new computers would figure out a route for me in as short a time. “That would be impossible” was what said friend said. “You’d need a computer the size of the car and even then it would be impossible because it would spend a whole day doing the calculations!”
Enough about the marvels. Occasionally there are delays in picking up satellite signals. These delays might be two or three minutes at the maximum. I’ve occasionally Not been able to log on to the Nulink service such as when I google the location of the nearest Best Buy store or inquire about the weather. When the service is working, which is most of the time, it’s fun to check fuel prices and then be able to drive to the lowest priced gas station even in a new city.
On a recent trip to the east coast I found “Ms. Garmin” telling me once or twice that I should stay left on a freeway split when it would have been preferable to stay right. Some have complained about the ads on the screen. It took two or three days before I even saw an ad. They’re so small and insignificant and only appear when you’re stopped. Why would one be looking at the screen at that point anyway? The vital information is still visible over and around these small ads. Why should one be bothered by seeing “Next time you buy gas, buy at Shell” or “Stay at a Best Western Motel on your trip?” In my opinion the ads are very inconsequential.
The pleasant and alert female voice tells me about the next turn a total of three times. One shouldn’t miss many turns with that kind of prompting. Yet, sometimes when driving on streets where the cross streets are more frequent than usual I may miss the turn anyway. Within a few seconds I hear the “recalculating response” and I know I’ll be back on my route before long even if I find myself driving through a shopping center parking lot. (My fault, not Ms. Garmin’s!)
Somewhat more disconcerting is that Ms. Garmin has on more than one occasion taken me back a different route than it took me to my original destination. Others, who may be using different manufacturers have mentioned this fact as well. Usually the elapsed time is the same for either route but this can be disconcerting.
Ms. Garmin does not know my home by address. If I type in my address the receiver shows my home about a block to the east of my real circle cul de sac. Depending upon the direction I want to go she also wants to route me down a road which no longer exists! This is not the device’s fault. It is Navteq’s fault. Garmin relies on Navteq’s mapping efforts so when Navteq is wrong so is Garmin. I know, because I’ve lived in our home for nine years, that this aforementioned road has been closed and planted over into a walking trail for at least that long. I also wrote Navteq about it three years ago as well as the last month! I wonder how many errors alleged to the G.P.S. receivers are actually due to faulty mapping!
In one of our cars the Garmin automatically shuts down when the ignition is turned off. On the other car the Garmin stays on, so one has to manually power down the device. I’ve finally learned where to press the power key so this action can be quickly done.
I give the Nuvi 1690 a four because there are a few things I’d like it to do better but it is a high four and I have no hesitation about recommending this G.P.S.
